Living with disability often
demands additional investments in order to achieve independence.
Acquiring assistive technologies, removing architectural barriers,
and make necessary modifications in homes and workplaces can place
an additional financial burden on families or businesses.
To meet the needs of people with disabilities living in the community,
there are a number of federal and state grant and loan programs
targeted to enabling independent living.

Financing - Title
7, Part B Grant Program
Limited financial assistance is available through these funds from
the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration.
They are designed to help consumers with disabilities address:
- health and disability
management
- self care
- mobility and home accessibility
- participating in community
activities
- communication ( writing,
reading, hearing, speaking)
- learning difficulties
Funds are available to purchase
services and adaptive equipment such as hand controls or lifts for
vehicles, ramps, roll-in showers, hearing aids, TTYs, or flashing
alarms or signals.

Financing - mPower
Adaptive Loan Fund
Through this state bond funded program, individuals and businesses
can obtain low interest loans of up to $100,000 to enable the acquisition
of assistive technology or to improve access at home or at work.
Individual may access the program in order to acquire items such
as:
- Cars or Vans with hand
controls and lifts
- Hearing aids
- Augmentative Communication
Devices
- Telecommunication Devices
for the Deaf-TTY
- Home Modifications
- Recreational Equipment
- Recreational Equipment
(hand cycles, sports wheelchairs)
Businesses may access the
resources in order to acquire items such as:
- Elevators & Lifts
- Building Modifications
- Worksite Adaptations for
Employees
- Accessible Transit Vehicles
This program is jointly administered
by Alpha One and the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME).
